In Pokemon Go, Pokestops are earmarked through GPS as public destinations or landmarks. And, what makes KM a public destination or a landmark? Our butterfly. In 2010, following in the footsteps of other cities, such as Chicago’s ‘Cows on Parade’ or Seattle’s ‘Pigs on Parade’, a St. Louis non-for-profit named Friends of Wings began ‘Wings in the City.’
The organization, which is BJC’s pediatric supportive care program, commissioned local artists to create the butterflies, which were each sponsored by a local business. After a long winter hibernation, in Spring 2011 more than 50 butterflies were ‘released’ into the city. They can be found today in places like Kiener Plaza, Forest Park, the Magic House, COCA, City Hall, the Central West End, and yup – you guessed it – at KellyMitchell in Clayton.
It Has All the Emerging Technology Feels.
Seriously. All of them. It’s basically a super technology. John Hanke, the founder of Niantic [aka the company that built Pokémon Go] told Game Informer in an interview “in 2014… Google and The Pokémon Company did an April Fool’s joke around Google Maps, where Pokémon spontaneously appeared in Google Maps, which ended up being tremendously successful; it went viral.”
At the time, Hanke already had a game out that was topping the charts – Ingress. Ingress is an augmented-reality, location-based, multi-player game; so, Hanke used technologies and concepts that were successful for Ingress and combed them with the idea that people were insanely infatuated with the idea of finding Pokémon on Google Maps to pitch The Pokémon Company the idea of Pokémon Go. And well, you know the rest.
It is Creating a Community.
At KellyMitchell, we believe in community. We all have our work community, our family community, our neighborhood community – and so on and so forth. And Pokemon Go is getting people of all ages, races, and sexes out of their houses, into our parks and communities, and they are connecting over this.
