Your pantry is stocked with canned veggies and noodles, your freezer absolutely cannot fit one more ounce of frozen food in it, and you have enough toilet paper to last you until the end of the year. While all these tangible goods are essential during a time of quarantine, what have you done to make sure you’re caring for yourself mentally? In times of uncertainty, it’s best to focus on controlling your controllables. To help you do that, we’ve come up with a couple of tips for you to continue to feel your best and keep your mind sharp.


Exercise

We’ve mentioned the importance of getting your blood pumping in a previous blog post, but we are going to say it again. It’s that important! The link between exercise and the chemical reactions in your brain are undeniable. Exercise releases endorphins in your brain that positively affect your mood. It can reduce your stress and anxiety almost immediately.


If you’re looking for something to help your indoor blues, go for a walk or run around your neighborhood. Join in on one of the push-up or plank challenges circulating social media. Pop-in your old Just Dance video game and have some fun! Remember, every small amount of exercise helps.


Stress-Reducing Activities

Partaking in stress-relieving activities is a surefire way to ease your mind while giving you a healthy escape from reality. Bring back some of your childhood nostalgia with an adult coloring book. Connect with your inner self via a relaxing guided meditation off Spotify. Let your stress dissipate while you treat yourself to a warm candlelit bubble bath. Try out aromatherapy to loosen up, by putting a few drops of your favorite essential oil into a diffuser. Some oils, such as thieves, even have added antimicrobial benefits while still smelling wonderful.


Many authors have released their e-books to the public free of charge, on Amazon. Check to see if any of your favorite writers have released their books and use their words to help you unwind. There is no shortage of wholesome activities at your fingertips that will make you feel relaxed and less stressed. Try a few different techniques out and see what works best for you!


Socialize

Now is the time when you need your people the most. Just because you are unable to go over to your best friend’s house does not mean you have to stop interacting with them. We live in a time of advanced technology that allows us to socialize with people without being with them physically.


Set up a Facetime or Skype group call and have a party! Treat yourself to a virtual game night with your closest pals or even an at-home happy hour with your roommates. Pick a show to watch with your bestie and take advantage of the Netflix “party” feature. Call an extended family member that you have not spoken to in a while and catch up. Physical social distancing does not have to mean social isolation.


Eat Healthily

Just like the link between exercise and mental stability, what we choose to put into our bodies plays a big role in what goes on inside our brains. Eating nutrient-rich foods is essential for good brain health. Use this extra time to learn to cook nutritious foods for you and your family.


Most restaurants and fast food services are most likely closed at the moment so you do not have the added temptation to run through your nearest fast food restaurant instead of cooking. Take advantage of this time and try out a few healthy Pinterest recipes. Your body and mind will thank you.


No matter how you choose to keep your mental health in check during this time of uncertainty make sure you are giving your mind the extra care it deserves. Utilize your resources and find comfort in the fact that this time is merely temporary.
